Discernment Counseling in Kansas City
Is discernment counseling right for you?
- You’re asking “should we stay or go?” and want a respectful, time-limited decision process.
- One partner is leaning out while the other is leaning in, and conversations keep looping.
- You want help choosing between separation/divorce or a defined period of working on the marriage.
Note: KCRI clinicians include Discernment Counseling among their therapy approaches in public listings.
How the process works
Discernment counseling is typically brief—often 1–5 sessions—with time spent together and individually so each partner can reflect without pressure. The goal isn’t to solve every problem; it’s to decide whether problems could be solved with full commitment. Most couples choose one of three paths:
- Status quo for now with new insight.
- Separation/divorce approached thoughtfully.
- Commit to a time-limited course of couples therapy (commonly ~six months) with divorce off the table during that period.
How KCRI supports your next step
What sessions may include
- A calm, structured space to understand what happened and where each of you stands—together and one-on-one.
- Guided reflection on roles, values, hopes, and willingness to try change.
- A clear summary of what each partner is taking from the conversations and which path makes most sense right now.
