Couples Retreat – A Time to Refocus & Reconnect
Our relationships often take a back seat to all the responsibilities in our lives. After work, family responsibilities, household chores, community activities (just to name a few), we often have very little left to give to each other. We’re spent, and reasonably so. We tell ourselves that our partner understands and that we’ll have more time for each other after this little season of craziness. But, if you’re like many of us, one busy season spills into the next, and before you know it, it has been a while since you’ve connected. You feel a little distant from each other, a little off. Some (or many) conversations are harder than they used to be. Misunderstandings happen more frequently. Everything seems harder.
If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Modern-day relationships are tough to navigate as we juggle multiple demands on our time.
Couples retreats offer the opportunity to dedicate time to focus on you and your relationship. A retreat can help you take stock of where you are right now and where you want to go, learn some things about yourself and your relationship that can make conversations and connection easier, and refocus, reconnect, and reignite the spark in your relationship!
Is a Couples Retreat Right for You and Your Relationship?
If you are looking for dedicated time to focus on your relationship a couples retreat might be a great option for you.
It is a fun and intentional time together that allows you to look at your relationship purposefully to foster a stronger connection.
What Happens at a Couples Retreat?
The Nuts & Bolts
- Our retreats typically consist of 10-20 couples from all walks of life.
- We spend three days together (Friday 6pm-8:30PM, Saturday 9AM-4PM, Sunday 9AM-12pm) focused on personal growth, understanding our relationship patterns, and learning tools to build our connection.
- Activities include short teaching segments from our relationship experts, individual activities to enhance self-awareness and promote self-reflection, and couple activities to promote understanding, empathy, and connection in your relationship.
- No one is ever required to talk in front of the group or share anything about yourself or your relationship. There are times when we will engage in a larger group discussion to ask and answer questions, but it is okay to spend this time engaged as a listener.
What Do We Focus On?
Self-Awareness & Personal Growth:
None of us have arrived! We all have strengths, and we all have rough edges. Our strengths contribute to the goodness in our relationship, and our rough edges contribute to the challenges we face in our relationship. This is normal! There are no perfect people and as a result there are no perfect relationships. Even with good intentions, we sometimes contribute to patterns that end up making our relationships less fulfilling than what they could be. There is no shame in admitting this, it’s true for all of us.
As a result, we all have room to grow. We will engage in individual exercises to assist you in clarifying your values, ways in which you contribute to the relationship—the good and the not so good—and what triggers you and why. This knowledge and awareness will set the stage for diving into your relationship dynamics—why you do what you do as a couple!
Understanding and Altering Relationship Dynamics:
All relationships get stuck in certain areas. Maybe it’s finances, sex, time together, or any number of issues that couples get gridlocked around. When these issues come up, we as humans have fairly typical ways of dealing with these hot button issues. Maybe you avoid them. Maybe they get brought up from time to time and tensions immediately flair. Maybe you give in to get the conversation over with. It’s likely that whatever your pattern—some of us are good at withdrawing, others are good at pursuing—certain issues cause conflict and over time it feels like we’re spinning our wheels (“Oh here we go again!). We seem to rarely make progress on them.
Again, if any of this sounds familiar, congratulations and welcome to the club! We all have one or two issues (or more!) that challenge us as couples. During our retreats, we help you get traction on one area of conflict that’s important to you. We’ll help you map out your conflict cycle, get clarity on what’s contributing to it (e.g., what’s getting triggered for you), and provide you some tools to make progress around this important issue with the goal of feeling heard and understood. This sets the stage for greater closeness and connection.
Intentionally Moving Forward
